The Only Constant

So today my final issue of Voltron comes out, and I feel like saying a few things…

Voltron12Covers_(2)_thumb-400x600

No, it isn’t quite the ending I’d planned when I’d pitched for the series, but I am extremely proud of the work my collaborators and I put out there, and greatly appreciate the opportunity. This particular issue is the best thing I’ve ever had published (so far), and think it’s clear that I’ve learned a thing or two in my 18-issue journey through the Voltron mythos. Hope some of it is well remembered in the years to come, especially the work we put into Sven, the Voltron Force’s most misunderstood (yet incredibly awesome) member.

Thanks to my fellow creators and artists: Ariel Padilla, Craig Cermak, N. Steven Harris, Marcelo Pinto, Adriano Lucas, Marshall Dillon, Simon Bowland, and the phenomenal cover artists that got people to pick up the book in the first place: Alex Ross, Sean Chen, Admira Wijaya, Wagner Reis, and Jack Herbert.  Additional thanks go to Nick Barucci and Joe Rybandt, the guys who put us all together, were a joy to work with, and were always willing to let me tell the story I wanted to tell. Hope to work with you all again sometime in the near future.

Thanks to Jeremy Corray and Tiffany Ilardi, who made me feel like some kind of big time writer guy by flying me out for signings and putting me on panels at giant conventions.

Finally, thanks to the fans that truly loved what we were doing all the way. Appreciate interacting with you on the Voltron boards and in person at the shows. Made some new friends throughout this entire process, and that’s what I’ll ultimately take with me.

See you all soon and thanks for the support!

Voltron #11 In Stores Tomorrow

All,

Voltron 11

Voltron #11 is in stores tomorrow and I think you should all buy it.

Not only is it pretty good, but it’s also the second to last issue of my Voltron run…for now anyway.

CBR’s got a preview up right this minute, and as it implies, this installment is ALL about Commander Keith, Princess Allura, and the secrets they’re keeping from each other.

Thanks for the support and hope you enjoy.

Voltron: Year One Trade In Stores Today!

The trade collection of Voltron: Year One is in stores today, and I have a few things to say about the entire series as a whole—

VoltronYOTP-Cov-xlg

First off, it was an incredible experience making a comic with Craig Cermak. We’ve been friends for years now, and I met him while he was still in high school and almost criminally obsessed with everything DC Comics and Geoff Johns. Even then, the thing he wanted most in the world was to draw comic books for a living, and I always told him that we’d work together someday. I think he thought I was joking, and though he ended up helping get Miranda Mercury out the door by coloring an issue (#299), I was tremendously excited when Dynamite took my recommendation that he was perfect for Voltron: Year One, and we got to make comics for real.

Now, the results are collected in a much more permanent looking package, and Craig is working with legendary writer Garth Ennis on the new Dynamite series Red Team.

So, in addition to telling you that you should buy it (goes without saying, right?), I wanted to also thank the rest of my collaborators, as well—Adriano Lucas, Simon Bowland, and Joe Rybandt. Immensely proud of the work we all did and think this series makes for a fine trade. Also really appreciate the hardcore Voltron fans that supported the book (in addition to the main one), and who knows, maybe we’ll do this again some day in the future…

Okay, enough mushy stuff—it’s out today, you should go ahead and just buy it. If your comic shop doesn’t have any, please don’t hesitate to request that they order you a copy.

Thanks again, and there’s a huge preview over at CBR to provide that final push, if needed…

7 Reasons To Buy Voltron #7

1. New Artist N. Steven Harris

Seems only fitting that this new age of the book also comes with a new artist. N. Steven Harris is a name that many of you have no doubt heard before, as his credits span over a decade, and he’s worked on some of the biggest characters published by Marvel, DC, and Dark Horse. It’s truly an honor to be working with someone whose work I’ve been buying since I was a teenager, and his pencil brings an entire new visual level to the book. The volume, the action, and the intensity only goes up from here, and Steven has been knocking it out the park since his very first sequence. You saw that if you saw the preview that hit a couple days ago but that is NOTHING compared to what he’s doing right now.

I think he might hate me sometimes, as all of the artists who work with me occasionally (often?) do, but the results are amazing thus far, and it would fantastic if the two of us could build a nice, sustained run on this. #7 feels like the beginning of a wonderful partnership and I think you’ll agree after checking it out.

2. Start of “Ten Lions”

Brand new storylines usually mean new jumping-on points, but that’s especially true in this case. With Zarkon dead (see below), the entire landscape of the universe is radically different, which allows for some familiar characters to take on new exciting roles as they attempt to define themselves for the future. Main guys to keep your eyes on are Keith and Lotor, who set out on bold, dangerous paths that you know, will probably lead to a major confrontation between the two.

It all starts here though with Ten Lions, Chapter 1: Long Live…

3. King Zarkon’s Really Dead

Sorry for the spoilers, but I really want you to read the book, which spoils it anyway. King Zarkon was gunned down at the end of the last issue (won’t say by who, cause that’s a surprise as well) and this story picks up roughly ten months after that incident. Was hard not being able to tell people outright that the reason so much of the first story was devoted to Zarkon and his secret Earthly origins, was because he was going to be dead by the end of it. Which now provides a glorious opportunity to take the mythos into new, exciting, and unexpected directions. And don’t think that implies everything that happened during issues 1-6 will go unreferenced going forward, because it supplied the first layer of foundation, and everything that happened there looms large not just now, but far into the second and third year (sales willing!) of the book.

4. New Evil Voltron

Can’t take sole credit for the idea of bringing new versions of Voltron into the series, as it was something put out there during one of our initial brainstorming sessions with the licensors. Think we were talking about Voltrons in different dimensions or something,  and someone said something like “steampunk Voltron.” Probably Jeremy Corray, but as usual for me, once someone says a few critical words or phrases, they inevitably get stuck in my head, and I start thinking—“Well, what if…..?” Then it snowballs from there and it’s all harnessing and massaging the ideas into shape.

So the initial idea of there being different versions of Voltron quickly became the crux of everything that happens in the book following Zarkon’s assassination, and my “take” on Voltron will ultimately live or die on the back of things like—what happens when there’s more than one Voltron active in the same universe? What if some of them are completely evil and make the late King Zarkon look restrained in comparison? What if it becomes painfully clear that one Voltron under the control of the Galaxy Alliance simply isn’t enough anymore?

5. Keith and Allura’s Relationship in Big Trouble

Commander Keith and Princess Allura are to enter a very…interesting phase of their relationship. Will keep me mouth shut on this for the most part, but…secrets? Well, secrets can change everything…

6. Upgrades

One of the things you’ll likely notice right off the bat is that we’ve made some construction tweaks to our main Voltron unit, the idea being that after he got wrecked in issue #5, a few alterations were made. Upgrades, if you will. The shared cockpit is the main thing, and know for some this is going to be a big change, but every chapter of “Ten Lions” will have an example of just what can be done with them all sharing the same space. There’s simply more drama to be mined with them all in closer proximity to each other, especially if they’re already not getting along so well when it’s time to go into action. There’s also a security/protective justification for a shared cockpit, and a couple other surprises to be revealed, so keep your eyes peeled. It’s gonna be cool though, trust me.

7. What They’re Saying About Us

Here’s some of the flattering things reviewers have had to say about this book, and its companion title, Voltron: Year One in recent months—

“Brandon Thomas starts this story off with a bang and never quite lets up.” Aaron Duran, Newsarama

“Praise must go to Brandon Thomas for delivering a competent story that successfully evolves a two-dimensional villain into a full-fledged character.” Harrison Rawdin, Unleash the Fanboy

“Thomas, Cermak and Co. are leaving nostalgia at the door and blazing a new trail for the space explorers.” Steven Andrade, Ain’t It Cool News

“Brandon Thomas makes the Voltron Force more interesting than I thought possible, and Craig Cermak is already on his way to becoming another superstar artist.” Tim Callahan, Comic Book Resources

4 Reasons to Buy Voltron: Year One #4

1. Craig Cermak-

Yes, I’ve known him for several years and consider him one of my closest personal friends, but here’s the bottom line—off the strength of only three issues of work, he was nominated for one of the most coveted awards in all of comics. And he’s only getting better by the page, so this is a great opportunity to witness the growth of one of the next great comic artists. Don’t you want to be that person that gets to brag to everybody in a few years that, “Man, I’ve been following Craig since Voltron: Year One, where you been!?” Or is that only something I do…?

2. New Space Explorers-

Since the very first issue, people have been asking me about Sven’s girlfriend. Who she is and whether or not she’s ever going to get out of the bed. Well, after a brief cameo during issue #3 (did you catch her in the briefing?) Commander Katrina emerges as an extremely capable, tough, and smart Space Explorer in her own right, with a cool team of operatives under her command. Who are going on a joint operation with our guys, so expect some sparks and some serious
confrontations.

3. Major Turning Point for Sven-

This first storyline is ALL about Sven and how he struggles to keep it together as Commander of his team of Space Explorers. The pressure has been building on him since the first page and he’s beginning to crack and take some dangerous steps to maintain his focus and control. Steps that just may dull that familiar feeling that “everything is going to fall apart any minute” just when he needs it the most.

4. The Secret History of Space Exploring-

One of my biggest goals for both books was to dramatically expand the skill set and mandate of the planet’s Space Explorers, morphing them into an intergalactic fighting force that defends Earth’s interests all over known (and unknown) space. Having the opportunity to write this prequel series gave me the platform to lift the curtain on the earliest days of the initiative, revealing some dark dealings and a conspiracy that goes all the way to the top. Which our characters naturally find themselves right in the middle of, and changes the course of their lives forever.

Voltron: Year One #4 is in stores and on Comixology right now. Here’s an extended eight-page preview that Newsarama posted up yesterday. Hope you enjoy and thanks for the support.

Exciting times around these parts, with a new issue of Voltron: Year One dropping this Wednesday, and artist N. Steven Harris making his grand debut on the main title with next week’s issue #7. First, we’ve got the preview to this week’s Voltron: Year One #4, and then direct links to writer Tim Callahan’s thoughts on both books, and his follow-up interview with me about some of the things I hoped to accomplish in my first arc, with some teasings of what comes next.

Thanks all, more previews and hype filled postings to come…

Final pre-game thoughts on Voltron #6

Okay, so issue #6 of Voltron hits today, and it’s a pretty big deal for me. When I turned in this script to my editor Joe Rybandt, it also included this gushy diatribe to him about what it meant to have reached the end of my first major story arc on my first monthly comic assignment. Being afforded the opportunity to take this one story from beginning to end is a personal victory that even I can’t diminish with my inferiority complex, and I just wanted you all to know that I’m taking the whole thing very seriously, and was glad to reach this critical point. And now I’m glad everyone finally, finally gets to read it.

Working so far ahead and thereby having to keep things secret from everybody is always tough for me. Ask anyone that’s met me in person—get me going and I’ll come like “this” close to just telling you everything that’s going to happen in the book, all through a wide, strangely fixed Kool-Aid grin. But now we’re here and I can officially talk about the big reveal of the story, which is the final piece that led Zarkon down his deep, dark path. This of course is in addition to lifting the curtain on exactly what the next story will be all about, in the form of a glorious preview of N. Steven Harris’ upcoming work on the title.

That’s all I’ll say for a couple days until the issue (and what happens in it) goes a little wider, but here’s a vague teaser for the issue—Someone dies. Someone returns. Someone lives.

Get your five page preview over at CBR, and a couple of great reviews have already posted up here and here.

Thanks again for all the support, and more soon…

All,

So glad this has officially been announced, and incredibly proud of Craig and the work he’s been doing on Voltron: Year One. Acclaimed Artist N. Steven Harris Joins Voltron with “Ten Lions” + September 2012 Solicits

All,

Okay, so we’ve been holding onto this announcement for a while now, but Voltron recruits a brand new artist in the next big storyline, and he’s bringing a whole new level of dynamic and exciting artwork to the title. For your first look at his amazing rendition of Voltron and its pilots, don’t miss issue #6, which includes his first sequence from #7 as a teaser for the next arc. This, of course, is in addition to the revelation packed conclusion of “The Sixth Pilot,” featuring the shocking moment this entire story has been leading to. Two words spell the future of Voltron going forward, and one of them is “Lies.” Stay tuned for more details, and samples of Steven’s artwork in the coming weeks.

Until then, check out the solicits for the September shipping issues…

The planet formally known as Doom and the Earth now share a common enemy—one capable of defeating Voltron in open combat and knocking down any planet that gets in its way. Commander Keith knows exactly who’s behind it all, and he’s got his prime suspect locked in a small windowless room for the next two hours. So Keith must decide exactly how far he’s willing to go to find the truth, and he’s got to decide quick. Because their new enemy is closing in on its next target, and even though Arus has endured much in the past, surviving “Ten Lions” might not be in its future…

Commander Sven had his chance…all he had to do was hesitate for just the briefest second, and let the man that’s been trying to ruin him get exactly what he deserved. But instead he does the right thing, and all it costs him is his reputation and his command. #686 has officially become a serious problem for the powers that be, and the solution is one that’ll change the course of the entire universe.
